History of Data Science (from ChatGPT)
- 1960s: The term “data science” was first used in the 1960s to
describe a new profession that would support the understanding and
interpretation of large amounts of data.
- 1962: John Tukey’s influential paper, “The Future of Data Analysis,”
highlighted the merging of statistics and computers, laying the
groundwork for modern data science.
- 1974: Peter Naur proposed “data science” as an alternative name for
computer science².
- 2001: William S. Cleveland’s paper, “Data Science: An Action Plan
for Expanding the Technical Areas of the Field of Statistics,”
emphasized the integration of statistics with data analysis.
- 2000s: The rise of big data, machine learning, and artificial
intelligence further propelled the field of data science, making it a
crucial discipline for data-driven decision-making.
Data science has evolved from its roots in statistics and computer
science to become a multidisciplinary field that supports data-driven
decision-making across various industries.
